The Pont du Gard is one of the most admirable Roman remains in the world. It is an aqueduct-bridge built by the Romans in the 1st century to supply the Augustan capital with water, ancient engineers built a succession of bridges and tunnels from the source of Eure in Uzès to Nîmes.
It is exceptional in terms of its dimensions since with its 275 meters long, 49 meters high and in total about nearly 50,000 tonnes of stone, the Pont du Gard is a book of records in itself. It is made up of 3 rows of superimposed arches, which is also an extremely rare achievement for the time.

In the 1st century AD, the Romans exploited abundant water which originated on the banks of the Alzon in Uzès, the source of Eure. It is then transported to Nîmes, via a 50 km long aqueduct of which the Pont du Gard is the main structure.
Discovered in 1991 by a team of amateur archaeologists, the regulation basin is a masonry valve. He regulated the flow of water in the aqueduct.
